About us

Ura Academy is primarily a literary society. The Academy is committed to working for preservation and perpetuation of Tenyimia culture in the present Tenyimia society which is undergoing great flux in lifestyle and culture. The poetic and philosophic aspects of Tenyidie, traditional garments, traditional ornaments and armours, folk dances and songs of Tenyimia people and all positive practices of our culture, such as the practice of courtesy in speech, of giving honor to one another and to the elders in particular, etc. It is committed to work for the welfare of the people in various fields of human development under a board of directors consisting of various Tenyimia groups. Under this Board, there are many different Divisions to look after various aspects of development in the field of literature, academic qualifications, social education, socio-cultural services, publications, women and youth welfare, etc.

Ura Academy was inaugurated on 6^th November, 1971 by the then Chief Minister of Nagaland, Dr. Hokishe Sema. Ura Academy has made considerable progress in various fields. It has published many books on different subjects. With the initiative of Ura Academy, Tenyidie was given recognition by NEHU in 1988 to be introduced in the Pre-University level. It was first introduced in Kohima College in 1988 and upgraded simultaneously in a proceeding manner from pre-university to degree level and to honors course. Tenyidie was introduced in the post-graduate level in 1997 under Nagaland University. In 2005, Tenyidie was further introduced for Ph. D level.

One of the Academy’s annual features is holding Tenyimia seminar annually in which mostly Tenyidie language teachers are invited to attend. Writers, educationists, public leaders and subject experts of different lines of teaching are invited to address the seminar. Besides this, it also hold meetings with area and village representatives occasionally in order to create awareness for all round development covering a wide range of subjects like agriculture, horticulture, fishery development, cattle farming, forestry and other eco-based subjects.

Ura Academy publishes a monthly journal entitled URA DZE which carries important information on the activities of Ura Academy. Poems – old and modern, stories, dramas and other literary pieces are the regular features of this journal.

Ura Academy had Celebrated its 75^th years of existence at Kohima in 2014.
